The liberal blogosphere is irate with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure for its decision not to renew a grant to Planned Parenthood, accusing the breast cancer charity of yielding to the beliefs of a new vice president who has stated her opposition to abortion.
The vice president, Karen Handel, ran for governor of Georgia as a Republican in 2010. After an unsuccessful campaign, she joined Susan G. Komen for the Cure in April 2011.
Continue Reading?Their Sarah Palin-approved new vice president is so caught up in this psychodrama around Planned Parenthood that she had to lash out,? wrote David Dayden at FireDogLake.
In 2010, Handel had written on her campaign blog that she ?did not support the mission of Planned Parenthood? and would end the group?s state government aid, according to ABC News.
The net effect of Susan G. Komen?s decision, liberals argued, was a more dangerous environment for women.
?Unless they are putting all that money into finding that cure for breast cancer they?ve been chasing all these years, the practical effect of this action is to deny women the ability to get screened for breast cancer ? women who have nothing to do with this ideological fight over abortion and who would probably gladly go somewhere besides Planned Parenthood to get tested if they had the means,? said Dayden.
Progressives bloggers further charged that Republicans and conservatives who opposed abortion were behind the change. Susan G. Komen for the Cure?s explanation for their decision was that Planned Parenthood was currently under investigation by Congress.
?The excuse, according to the foundation, is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation. Of course, we know that?s one hell of a flimsy excuse, since the ?investigation? is nothing more than an attempt by House Republicans to put Planned Parenthood out of business,? wrote Kaili Joy Gray at the Daily Kos.
Liberals also argued that Susan G. Komen had so damaged itself by this action that there was no way to undo the harm that they had done to their brand.
?The best, most delicious aspect of this is the fact that there simply is no way for the Komen foundation to undo the damage they have done. They simply can?t- this action will forever leave them branded as a tool of the reactionary right. And even if they wanted to reverse course, and begin working with Planned Parenthood again, they couldn?t because of the weaselly way they rolled this out,? wrote progressive blogger John Cole at Balloon Juice.
That said, liberals were concerned about conservatives might do as a next step.
?Now, anti-choice activists are demanding that Congress, like Komen, defund Planned Parenthood, and even calling on Komen to continue to bend to their demands by dropping its support for stem cell research,? warned Brian Tashman at RightWingWatch.
