Plane makes emergency belly landing

NEWARK, N.J (AP) ? An airline official says a US Airways Express flight with 34 people aboard was forced to make a belly landing at Newark International Airport after experiencing landing gear trouble. No injuries were reported.

US Airways spokesman Davien Anderson says a turboprop plane that left Philadelphia shortly before 11 p.m. Friday landed safely at Newark with its landing gear retracted at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

Anderson says the flight, being operated by Piedmont Airlines, was carrying 31 passengers and three crew members. He says the plane circled Newark in a holding pattern while working to get the gear down. After several failed attempts, the plane landed on its belly.

Anderson says the passengers were evacuated to the terminal by bus. He says US Airways is cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident.

Breast Cancer: How We'll Better Predict Who it Strikes (Op-Ed)

Annette Lee, associate investigator at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, contributed this article to LiveScience's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.

We may never be able to fully prevent the occurrence of breast cancer, but I believe within five years we will be able to identify individuals who will develop breast cancer with much higher accuracy than we can with the predictive tools we have now.

Currently, many women make difficult medical decisions based on age, ethnicity, medical history, family history, lifestyle and BRCA-gene status that are weighted independently and collectively to estimate risk for the development of breast cancer. However, a woman with all odds against her may never develop breast cancer, while another with no known risk factors may succumb to the disease within a few years.? There are still many unknowns.

Currently, large cohorts of women with a diagnosis of breast cancer are providing information to researchers and the technology to discover previously unknown genetic factors is rapidly developing ? both outcomes bring the opportunity for new discoveries.?

While there is no doubt BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutations significantly increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer, they are not the only factors involved. Some women who have the known BRCA mutations never go on to develop breast cancer; while some women with no BRCA mutations do. There are several ongoing genetic studies to identify other gene mutations involved in the development of breast cancer.

In addition, the ability to sequence whole genomes has increased exponentially, while the costs have decreased.? That has helped change the way we now view DNA and RNA. Segments we once thought of as "junk" or "spacer" DNA have turned out to be key gene regulators.?

More emphasis is also being placed on not just DNA sequencing, per se, but other genetic components, as well. Small, non-coding RNA sections are now recognized as important molecules in modifying gene expression ? especially in cancer.?The influences of DNA and histone modifications, which also affect gene expression, are also actively being explored.?

The development of cancer does not happen overnight. There is a progression of steps that need to occur for cancer to be potentially lethal. First, normal cells need to transform into cancer cells, the cancer cells need to divide, expand and not die at the same rate as normal cells ??and more importantly, the cancer cells need to spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body and continue their invasion of healthy tissue. If we can interrupt that chain of events at any point, we can save lives.?

In collaboration with Iuliana Shapira, M.D., at the Monter Cancer Center, we have been collecting blood and tumor samples from women diagnosed with breast and/or ovarian cancer to study the course of the disease from diagnosis through completion of treatment. By studying samples from the same person at different points, we can identify changes at the DNA-, RNA- and protein-level that reflect the presence of cancer, disease status, treatment response and, in some cases, relapse. Data on multiple factors from serial time points gives us important insight into what makes cancer cells different from normal cells and how we can potentially leverage this information towards prevention, detection and treatment.

We are also collecting longitudinal (yearly) blood samples from women who are at high risk for developing cancer to see if biomarkers are present that could indicate future cancer?development. Indentifying measureable, pre-cancer changes would give us a tool to distinguish women who are at high risk for developing cancer, but may not distinguish women who are at high risk who will go on to develop cancer in the near future. The key to curing cancer is early detection.

With the availability of subject samples to study and the methods to perform in-depth genetic analysis on multiple levels, we will ultimately be better equipped to accurately identify and define an individual's risk of developing breast cancer rather than relying on population statistics.

Amazon Kindle Keyboard 3G being discontinued?

Amazon confirmed as early as last September that the Kindle Keyboard would be sticking around, but much like your favorite dessert, nothing is forever. The Kindle Keyboard 3G is now showing as unavailable or out of stock at Amazon's site, as well as at Best Buy and Target. Of course, the last of those has had this here device on sale for what feels like forever, but it's still somewhat sad to see it come to the end of its road. It's entirely possible that the company's Lab126 is cooking up a replacement alongside those mythical smartphones, but it's unclear if such a conceptual piece is on the immediate horizon. We've reached out to Amazon regarding the disappearance, and we'll be sure to update this post as we learn more.

Megaupload founder suffers setback in U.S. extradition bid

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand court ruled on Friday that the United States does not have to hand over all its evidence against Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, a setback for the German national in a U.S. bid to extradite him for alleged online piracy, fraud and money laundering.

The Court of Appeal overturned a lower court ruling that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) should disclose all its evidence so Dotcom, released on bail last February, could fairly contest the case against him.

The FBI accuses Dotcom, who founded the Megaupload file-sharing site which housed everything from family photos to blockbuster films, of leading a group that netted $175 million since 2005 by copying and distributing copyrighted content without authorization.

Lower courts had ruled twice that Dotcom should have access to all material the FBI was basing its extradition case on.

The Court of Appeal said the U.S. government had a duty of "candor and good faith" in making an extradition bid, but a summary of the evidence held would suffice.

"It is for the requesting state to decide what information it wishes to put before the requested state in support of its request," the court said.

It said there were safeguards for any accused, such as the New Zealand courts and government seeking more information if they are not satisfied there is a prima facie case to be answered.

Dotcom maintains that Megaupload, one of the world's most popular websites before it was shut down in January last year, simply provided online storage services and should not be held responsible for stored content.

William Akel, one of Dotcom's lawyers, said an appeal to New Zealand's Supreme Court was being considered.

"How can you determine whether or not there has been compliance with candor and good faith if you don't know what documents are being relied on to support the case?" he said on Radio New Zealand.

Since the initial raid, the courts have ruled that search warrants used in the raid were illegal, unfrozen some of Dotcom's assets for living and legal expenses, relaxed restrictions of travel, and ordered extensive evidence disclosure.

A New Zealand government spy agency was also found to have illegally spied on him, bringing an apology from the prime minister, and opening the way for a damages claim.

Dotcom, who also goes by the name of Kim Schmidt, is a German national but with residency in New Zealand, which made it illegal to spy on him.

The extradition hearing for Dotcom and the other three defendants is scheduled to be held in August.
