Model of Sun's magnetic field created

May 22, 2013 ? Researchers at the Universities of Leeds and Chicago have uncovered an important mechanism behind the generation of astrophysical magnetic fields such as that of the Sun.

Scientists have known since the 18th Century that the Sun regularly oscillates between periods of high and low solar activity in an 11-year cycle, but have been unable to fully explain how this cycle is generated.

In the 'Information Age', it has become increasingly important to be able to understand the Sun's magnetic activity, as it is the changes in its magnetic field that are responsible for 'space weather' phenomena, including solar flares and coronal mass ejections. When this weather heads in the direction of Earth it can damage satellites, endanger astronauts on the International Space Station and cause power grid outages on the ground.

The research, published in the journal Nature, explains how the cyclical nature of these large-scale magnetic fields emerges, providing a solution to the mathematical equations governing fluids and electromagnetism for a large astrophysical body.

The mechanism, known as a dynamo, builds on a solution to a reduced set of equations first proposed in the 1950s which could explain the regular oscillation but which appeared to break down when applied to objects with high electrical conductivity. The mechanism takes into account the 'shear' effect of mass movement of the ionised gas, known as plasma, which makes up the Sun. More importantly it does so in the extreme parameter regime that is relevant to astrophysical bodies.

"Previously, dynamos for large, highly conducting bodies such as the Sun would be overwhelmed by small-scale fluctuations in the magnetic field. Here, we have demonstrated a new mechanism involving a shear flow, which served to damp these small-scale variations, revealing the dominant large-scale pattern," said Professor Steve Tobias, from the University of Leeds' School of Mathematics, a co-author of the research.

What is more, this mechanism could be used to describe other large, spinning astronomical bodies with large-scale magnetic fields such as galaxies.

The dynamo was developed through simulations using the high-performance computing facilities located at the University of Leeds.

"The fact that it took 50 years and huge supercomputers shows how complicated the dynamo process really is." said Prof Fausto Cattaneo, from the University of Chicago's Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The presence of spots on the Sun has been known since antiquity, and further analysed after the invention of the telescope by Galileo in the 16th Century. However, their cyclic nature, with periods of high activity (lots of sunspots) and low activity (few sunspots) following each other, was not identified until the 18th Century. At the start of the 20th Century it was then recognised that these sunspots were the result of the Sun's magnetic field. Since then much effort has been devoted to understanding what processes lead to the formation of sunspots and the origin of their cyclic behaviour.

In Coens' Cannes hit, Oscar Isaac gets his break

CANNES, France (AP) ? Joel and Ethan Coen had almost given up on casting the lead for their film "Inside Llewyn Davis." The part, a folk musician in early 1960s Greenwich Village, demanded the elusive combination of someone who could both carry a movie and perform the songs central to the film.

Then they met Oscar Isaac.

"It just didn't happen until he walked in the room," says Joel Coen. "There was a point at which we wondered if we'd written something that was essentially impossible to cast."

The Coens have long been known for their casting acumen, but they may have outdone even themselves with Isaac, a 33-year-old, Juilliard-trained actor with a few notable credits to his name but nothing on par with a major Coen brothers release. The film was greeted ecstatically at the Cannes Film Festival at its Sunday premiere, with Isaac hailed as the festival's breakout star and a possible Oscar nominee.

"I finally got the shot," Isaac said in an interview. "And I got it in this context, which is more than I honestly could have ever imagined for myself."

In the film, Isaac plays Llewyn Davis, a character very loosely modeled on folk musician Dave Van Ronk. Despite his evident talent for personal songs with traditional folk influences, he's an artist just barely out of step with history. Bitter and increasingly frustrated, he's a raging failure, missing his moment, one instead grabbed by Bob Dylan.

For many, Isaac's story is kind of an inverse of Llewyn. He is a young actor who gets his chance ? "his minute," says music supervisor T Bone Burnett ? and takes advantage of it.

"The whole story is about a guy who never gets there," says Burnett, the frequent Coen collaborator. "And yet the actual person who's playing that guy, does it. He seizes that minute like a motherf-----."

Isaac isn't as sarcastic or as antagonistic as Llewyn: "My energy toward people is very much like 'I mean you no harm,'" he says. And he's trying not to get too far ahead himself with his rousing success at Cannes. His instinct, he says, "is always to diminish any good thing, so as not to be devastated later."

While Isaac says that he identifies with the role fortune and opportunity plays in catching a break, he more associates with the workmanlike attitude of both Llewyn and the Coens. For him, it was as much about gradually working toward "Llewyn Davis" as it was landing a single break.

"I remember when I was getting out of school, I was like, 'If they just gave me one shot. If they gave me the one shot, oh man, I know I can do it,'" he says. "Then I got my first movie and it came and it went, and I was like, 'If they just gave me one more shot, just another shot.' Then I started getting work, and I realized it's not about that. It's not about the shot. It's about work."

Born in Guatemala and raised in Florida, Isaac grew up playing in a variety of bands as a guitarist and singer, everything from ska to a hardcore band in which he sported blue hair. But since coming out of Juilliard, the New York actor has found his musical talents valuable in Hollywood. He also played a musician in the direct-to-DVD high school reunion comedy "10 Years."

His most notable previous credits include Madonna's British period film "W.E." and Nicolas Winding Refn's neo-noir "Drive," in which he played the formerly incarcerated husband of Carey Mulligan's character. (Mulligan co-stars in "Inside Llewyn Davis," along with Justin Timberlake.)

But when he heard about the Coens' film, he knew that his combination of skills was perfectly suited to the part.

"I said: I have to get a shot at this movie because I feel like my 33 years of life have been preparing me to do something like this," says Isaac.

He first submitted a recording of himself performing the traditional blues ballad, "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me," which Llewyn plays in the film. He auditioned for a casting director and then later for the Coens. Usually, as a guard against later disappointment, Isaac immediately tosses a script after an audition. But he didn't this time, and kept working on the part for the next month before Joel Coen called to tell him he got the part.

His preparation included performing the film's songs, like Llewyn, in downtown New York clubs. Buster Keaton was an influence in forming a "mask of melancholy."

"I would go to parties with that and try to interact with people with that," says Isaac. "It's tough because it's not about being cool. In a way, it's just about being very open and very up front with who you are. That was a scary place to live in."

But the music was central to character, a kind of window into Llewyn's soul. A bit of advice from Burnett (who also did the music for the Coens' "O Brother, Where Art Thou?") was crucial: "Sing like you're singing to yourself."

Along with Burnett, Isaac collaborated with Timberlake and Marcus Mumford. Using the parlance of musicians, Timberlake said Isaac "threw it down" in his performance.

"It felt like a little bit of serendipity," Timberlake says of the Cannes reception to Isaac. "Just seeing the looks on people's faces looking at him like, 'Where did you come from?' It felt like: 'Llewyn finally made it.'"

Moviegoers will surely become more familiar with Isaac when CBS Films releases "Inside Llewyn Davis" this December in the heart of awards season. (He also co-stars alongside Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen in the upcoming thriller "Two Faces of January.")

"Why this movie is so personal ? I think to all of us ? is because of the recognition that it just as easily can go the other way," Isaac says.

"There's very few geniuses that are shooting across the sky like Shakespeare or Dylan. The rest of us, it's like you have to work and be talented, but you got to be lucky for a lot of this stuff to happen."

How to Plan a Romantic Dinner - Mountain View Publishing Online

How to Plan a Romantic Dinner

?

Don?t wait for a special occasion to plan a date night with your significant other. While time and money are not always available for taking your loved one out on the town, you don?t need to sacrifice romance. Sometimes the most romantic thing you can do for your partner is to plan a special evening at home with dinner, drinks, and dessert. Even if you don?t like to cook, there are ways to arrange an enchanting dinner, whether you choose simple recipes or order the courses in from your favorite restaurant or market. We?ll show you how to do both.

First, set the atmosphere. If you have kids, arrange for them to stay with friends if they?re old enough, or with a babysitter outside the house. (Grandparents are a great choice if you?re lucky enough to have them close by.) Choose a time that works well for both you and your significant other, where neither of you will have to worry about other commitments such as working late, answering emails, or running errands. To make sure your partner knows the plan, opt for a thoughtful handwritten invitation rather than a verbal one to make the date special. Agree to turn off your cellphones or set them aside in another room to ensure that you give each other the attention you both deserve throughout the evening. Set the table with candles and flowers, a nice tablecloth, cloth napkins, and your best silverware, dishware, and glassware. If you feel inclined, spread rose petals across the table for an extra romantic flair. Select music that you both find enjoyable and relaxing, and that matches the ambience you?re aiming for.

Now for the dinner. There are two options.

If you love to cook, begin by deciding on a menu. Select tried-and-true recipes that you know your significant other enjoys. Choose an appetizer. It could be as simple as a cheese and olive plate with thin slices of baguette, which takes little prep time, or something more complex that you can plate and eat with utensils. A plus for finger food appetizers is that you can feed them to each other. Decide on the main course, perhaps a favorite meal that you know your partner enjoys, but that you may not get a chance to make regularly. Select a nice bottle of wine if you?ll be drinking that pairs well with your main dish. If you prefer to have all the cooking done beforehand, prep the dishes and hold them in the oven on low to keep them warm. If you don?t mind cooking while you share a glass of wine, do all the prep work up front (chopping, measuring, etc.) so that as you cook, you can toss the ingredients together while you share quality time with your significant other. For dessert, make your partner?s favorite cake, pastry, or other sweet ending and consider pairing it with a dessert wine or an after-dinner drink.

If you don?t like to cook, you?ll still need to begin by deciding on a menu. Select a restaurant or market to order from. It could be your significant other?s favorite restaurant, or if you?re feeling creative and have the time to pick them up, a mix-and-match of favorite courses from different places around town. Choose an appetizer, main course, and dessert. Give yourself enough time to pick up the food and transfer it to nice plates or platters for serving and eating. Ask the restaurant for suggestions on wine or cocktails to pair with your food selections, and pick up a bottle of wine or the ingredients for drinks as well. Have everything set up and dispose of the take-out containers before your significant other arrives.

Aside from the prep work, make sure that televisions, computers, cellphones, and any other potential mood busters are turned off to minimize distractions and maximize the attention you are able to give each other. What have you done in the past to plan a romantic dinner for your significant other?

The Newest 3D-Printed Gun Is Far More Dangerous For Much Cheaper

After the stir several weeks ago, buzz surrounding Defense Distributed's 3D-printed gun has begun to (somewhat) die down. This is probably due in part to Kim Dotcom's removal of the gun's blueprint from Mega and the fact that, frankly, the gun itself isn't much of an immediate threat. But as one potential threat dissipates, just like clockwork, a new one has appeared on the horizon. And any fear creeping up on you with this newest incarnation of the 3D-printed gun might actually be warranted.

While Defense Distributed's heavy-handidly named Liberator was good for about one (highly expensive) shot before becoming effectively useless, its successor only costs about $25, can be printed on a consumer-grade printer, and is good for, as the video shows, at least nine rounds?with the potential for many more.

Designed by a Wisconsin engineer who identifies himself anonymously as "Joe" and his creation troublingly as the "Lulz Liberator," the gun is made out of generic Polylac PA-747 ABS, otherwise known as the type of plastic most commonly used in consumer-grade 3D printers. According to Joe, this cheaper material is actually stronger than the ABS plastic used in the much more expensive, Stratasys pro printer that Defense Distributed used. Apparently attempts to use the Stratasys resulted in the gun's barrel exploding, something that is, generally, not ideal.

Contributing to its sturdier status, the Lulz Liberator also holds a bit more metal hardware than its predecessor: traditional hardware store screws replaced the flimsy plastic printed pins. Then, to make everything good and (arguably) legal, the same piece of non-functional steel placed in the Liberator exists in the Lulz variety, allowing it to set off metal detectors and comply with the Undetectable Firearms Act.

Of course, like you'd expect with any plastic gun, it still doesn't work perfectly. Some of the screws as well as the firing pin had to be replaced over the course of the video, and after every shot, while the ammo cartridge didn't explode, it did expand enough to require some hammer pounding before it was ready to go again. But even with its flaws, the message is clear: much more threatening printed guns are possible?and they have the potential to be dirt cheap.

Unlike Defense Distributed's big coming out, though, Joe still hasn't put the plans for his Lulz Liberator online. And his hesitance thus far isn't surprising given the fact that the State Department forced Defense Distributed to remove their plans, citing export control violations.

Joe doesn't claim anarchist roots like Cody Wilson, Defense Distributed's founder. But he does believe him and Wilson are after the same ultimate goal. According to Joe, "I agree with Cody's idea that this is a perfect fusion of the first and second amendments."

The word "perfect," apparently, being a highly subjective term. [Forbes]

Ari Folman animates Robin Wright in 'The Congress'

(AP) ? Hollywood is hell.

That's an idea to set tongues wagging at the Cannes Film Festival, and it's the distinct impression left by Israeli director Ari Folman's head-spinning part-animated feature "The Congress."

Fittingly, Cannes provided the inspiration for the director's dystopian vision of the entertainment business, which stars actress Robin Wright as, well, actress Robin Wright ? a 40something performer whose career is on the slide.

Folman conceived the kernel of the film when he came to the festival in 2008 with "Waltz With Bashir," his Academy Award-nominated animated film about his experiences as a young Israeli soldier in Lebanon in the 1980s.

The director said he was walking through the bustling movie marketplace at Cannes when he saw an elderly woman.

"And my sales agent asked me, do you recognize this lady? And I said no," Folman said. "And he told me her name and I was shocked, because she was this goddess American actress from the 70s. She was in her 70s, and no one recognized her. And this is Mecca for cinema, this place!

"And I thought, she's got in front of her, everywhere, the image of her young, stolen forever in the movies. And here she is and she has to live with her image forever young, but she's getting old."

Folman diplomatically declined to name the actress. But he said the episode gave him a way to realize a long-held dream of adapting "The Futurological Congress," a satirical sci-fi novel by Polish writer Stanislaw Lem in which pharmaceutical overlords keep the population hooked on hallucinogenic drugs.

In the movie, Wright agrees to become a "scanned actor," a digital avatar owned by her studio. The digital Wright can be endlessly, agelessly used in new movies ? the studio makes her "Agent Robin" in a sci-fi action series ? while the flesh-and-blood person grows old in obscurity.

The film's live-action first half is an entertainingly bleak depiction of Hollywood, with an on-the-ropes Wright berated by her agent (a delicious Harvey Keitel) and bullied by her studio boss (a malevolent Danny Huston).

Wright has been called brave for taking on issues of aging and image so directly. But Folman said he didn't see it that way when he offered the role to the actress after sitting across from her at an awards ceremony and thinking she looked sad.

"I think it's a great role," he said. "She is Robin Wright, she is Agent Robin in the movie, she's an animated character, she's an old Robin at the very end, she sings two songs ? it's a great role.

"Although Harvey Keitel told me one day on the set, 'Man, she is so brave. You could have offered me the world, I would never do what she does in this movie.'"

Wright has said she doesn't think she is playing herself, even though she and her screen character share a name and many biographical details, including roles in "The Princess Bride" and "Forrest Gump."

Once Wright has been digitally scanned, the movie switches to animation as the character visits a conference at a luxury hotel ? where her films screen endlessly and she goes unrecognized ? and learns of a sinister plot to make the power of celebrity even more addictive.

The movie's audacious shifts of tone, and its swirling, psychedelically tinged animation, have elicited diverse reactions at Cannes, where "The Congress" opened the Director's Fortnight competition.

Many saw it as original but uneven. It's inarguably a strikingly original work by a director who is both amused and despairing about the modern entertainment business.

Folman, a genial, bearded 50-year-old sporting a gold medallion and an earring, says he fears the sort of movies that inspired him ? the director-driven American cinema of the 1970s ? is dying, soon to be found only in cinema museums.

And don't get him started on 3-D, CGI and the other digital tricks that, Folman thinks, are ruining movies.

"The role of the director is completely different (today)," he said. "Until recently the urgency on the set to make a movie was huge. Today, it's only part of the job, because you can fix everything afterwards. The set is blue screens, and then you build it and you can fix it. And sometimes it's for the good, but I can give you examples where it's terrible.

"My favorite sci-fi movie ever is 'Blade Runner.' This film was done with hand-made crafts."

For the movie, director Ridley Scott "built the sets ? it's wood and paper and plastic and aluminum. I see this movie every few months on a big screen at home and it will live forever.

"Same guy did 'Prometheus' last year. Who saw it?"

Folman is keeping the flame burning for an older form of cinema ? but it's a slow and laborious process. "The Congress" took five years to make, and slightly under an hour of animation required two years of work by animators in nine countries.

"I try not to look at myself as this nostalgic (person)," Folman added, pausing a second before adding: "But."

"I don't say we will have scanned actors. I think the human side will win. I am a true believer in that.

"But if I look at my kids and the way they use everything ? iPads and electronics and everything ? I have to be honest with myself and say, if my kids, in 15 years' time, see a movie with scanned characters, they won't give a damn."

Infosys to challenge latest tax demand of $105.3 million

BANGALORE (Reuters) - Infosys Ltd, India's No. 2 software services exporter, said on Monday it would challenge a 5.77 billion rupees ($105.3 million) income tax demand raised by Indian authorities earlier this month.

The demand relates to certain tax benefits on income from software development done overseas at the clients' location and revenue from special economic zones in India, Infosys said in a statement.

It said the latest tax demand disregards a clarification by the government in January.

Infosys is also contesting similar tax demands for the fiscal years 2005 through 2008, according to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Infosys is in the process of filing an appeal before the Commissioner of Income Tax," the company said.

Bans Of Same-Sex Marriage Can Take A Psychological Toll

Opponents of same-sex marriage participate in the March for Marriage in Washington, D.C., on March 26, as the Supreme Court hears arguments on California's Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage.

As the country awaits two important Supreme Court decisions involving state laws on same-sex marriage, a small but consistent body of research suggests that laws that ban gay marriage ? or approve it ? can affect the mental health of gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans. When several states passed laws to prohibit same-sex marriage, for example, the mental health of gay residents seemed to suffer, while stress-related disorders dropped in at least one state after gay marriage was legalized.

Here's the research trail:

Beginning around 2004, several states banned gay marriage. Just before that series of bans, the National Institutes of Health happened to conduct a massive survey of 43,093 Americans. The questions elicited detailed information about respondents' mental health. (To validate what people reported about themselves, psychiatrists also interviewed samples of the people in the survey, and their medical diagnoses closely matched the findings of the survey.)

Soon after the wave of state bans on gay marriage, in 2004 and 2005, the NIMH conducted a second round of interviews, managing to reach 34,653 of the original respondents. (That's a high rate compared with most polls and surveys.)

Mark Hatzenbuehler, a psychologist at Columbia University who studies the health effects of social policies, analyzed the data gathered before and after the bans to determine how the mental health of people who identified themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual had changed in those states.

Hatzenbuehler and his colleagues Katie McLaughlin, Katherine Keyes and Deborah Hasin published their analysis in 2010 in the American Journal of Public Health.

"Lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals who lived in the states that banned same-sex marriage experienced a significant increase in psychiatric disorders," Hatzenbuehler says.

"There was a 37 percent increase in mood disorders," he says, "a 42 percent increase in alcohol-use disorders, and ? I think really strikingly ? a 248 percent increase in generalized anxiety disorders."

To put those numbers in perspective, although Hatzenbuehler did find more than a doubling in the rate of anxiety disorders in states that eventually banned gay marriage, in absolute numbers he found that anxiety disorders went from being reported among 2.7 percent to 9.4 percent of gay, lesbian and bisexual people.

The million-dollar question is whether the laws, and the debates around them, were responsible for the change in mental health. To help answer that question, Hatzenbuehler and his colleagues looked at comparable groups and experiences.

"We showed the psychiatric disorders did not increase in lesbian, gay and bisexual populations in states that didn't debate and vote on same-sex marriages," Hatzenbuehler says. "There were also no increases ? or much smaller increases ? among heterosexuals living in the states that passed same-sex marriage bans."

? Gay men in Massachusetts experienced fewer stress-related disorders after that state legalized same-sex marriage.

Hatzenbuehler has also found, in a study conducted in Massachusetts, that gay men experienced fewer stress-related disorders after that state permitted gay marriage.

In a study tracking the health of 1,211 gay men in Massachusetts, Hatzenbuehler found that the men visited doctors less often and had lower health treatment costs after Massachusetts legalized same-sex marriage. When the researchers examined the diagnostic codes doctors were giving the men, they saw a decrease in disorders that have been linked to stress, such as hypertension, depression and adjustment disorders.

Hatzenbuehler says he thinks stress associated with gay-marriage debates was the "X factor." He says the quantitative data is backed by what gays, lesbians and bisexuals told the surveyors. "They reported multiple stressors during that period," Hatzenbuehler says. "They reported seeing negative media portrayals, anti-gay graffiti. They talked about experiencing a loss of safety and really feeling like these amendments and these policies were really treating them as second-class citizens."

Today, about three-dozen states ban gay marriage and about a dozen have passed laws that approve it. Some states have laws that permit civil unions but ban gay marriage.

It's unclear how or whether the upcoming Supreme Court decisions involving the constitutionality of same-sex marriage will affect the mental and physical health of gays and lesbians nationally.

It's likely that many gay, lesbian and bisexual people would see an upholding of same-sex marriage bans as an example of prejudice. But it's also possible the debate around the Supreme Court decisions could have different effects on gays than a local debate involving friends and neighbors.

Hatzenbuehler says his larger point is really that policymakers, judicial leaders and ordinary citizens need to remember that social policies are also health policies.

Eesha Khare, 18, of Saratoga, Calif., received the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award of $50,000 for the invention of a tiny energy-storage device.

Waiting hours for a cellphone to charge may become a thing of the past, thanks to an 18-year-old high-school student's invention. She won a $50,000 prize Friday at an international science fair for creating an energy storage device that can be fully juiced in 20 to 30 seconds.

The fast-charging device is a so-called supercapacitor, a gizmo that can pack a lot of energy into a tiny space, charges quickly and holds its charge for a long time.

What's more, it can last for 10,000 charge-recharge cycles, compared with 1,000 cycles for conventional rechargeable batteries, according to Eesha Khare of Saratoga, Calif.

"My cellphone battery always dies," she told NBC News when asked what inspired her to work on the energy-storage technology. Supercapacitors also allowed her to focus on her interest in nanochemistry ? "really working at the nanoscale to make significant advances in many different fields."

To date, she has used the supercapacitor to power a light-emitting diode, or LED. The invention's future is even brighter. She sees it fitting inside cellphones and the other portable electronic devices that are proliferating in today's world, freeing people and their gadgets for a longer time from reliance on electrical outlets.

"It is also flexible, so it can be used in rollup displays and clothing and fabric," Khare added. "It has a lot of different applications and advantages over batteries in that sense."

Khare's invention won her the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, conducted this week in Phoenix, Ariz. For more information about the event and other prize winners, check out our earlier coverage.

Bill Maher Spoofs IRS Tea Party Tax Forms (VIDEO)

Bill Maher might not agree with Republicans when it comes to Benghazi, but he's on their side when it comes to the recent IRS scandal targeting Tea Party members.

On Friday night's episode of "Real Time," Maher admitted that he's quite convinced that the IRS was unfairly scrutinizing Tea Party members -- and he has the tax forms to prove it.

Watch Maher present the shocking, "real" tax forms that the tri-cornered hat-wearing activists filled out this year in the video above.

Police clash with youth in Cairo after anti-Mursi protest

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian security forces clashed with young men in central Cairo after a protest by several thousand opponents of President Mohamed Mursi, state news agency MENA reported.

The forces fired tear gas at the youths throwing firebombs and stones at them. Police arrested a number of men, MENA reported.

The Friday protest billed as a major demonstration against Mursi drew only a few thousand people, signaling how momentum for protests that erupted around the second anniversary of the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak has steadily evaporated.

Members of "rebellion," an anti-Mursi campaign launched this month, gathered signatures at the demonstration for a petition calling for Mursi's removal and early elections.

Organizers said they have collected 2 million signatures.

Mursi presides over a deeply polarized political landscape and a public suffering from the economic impacts of two years of political turmoil since the 2011 uprising.

Amtrak service between New York and New Haven, Conn., is also closed while the incident is investigated and damage repaired.

At about 6:10 p.m. Friday a Metro-North train heading east from New York City derailed outside Bridgeport, Conn., and was hit by a westbound train on an adjacent track. Some 700 passengers were on board the trains, the Associated Press reported.

The cause was unclear. Some local officials said it did not appear to be terrorism, and a team from the National Transportation Safety Board arrived Saturday to investigate issues ranging from crew performance to the condition of the track.

The New York area?s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said its commuter rail service between South Norwalk and New Haven is suspended until further notice, while regular service will operate between Stamford and Grand Central Terminal.

Commuters could be affected all week as the investigation proceeds.

The MTA said damage on the two affected tracks is ?extensive,? and that the two other tracks on this segment of the railway are out of service for a project replacing overhead wires.

?The [damaged] train cars cannot be removed until the on-scene investigation is complete, and they will need to be removed by crane,? the MTA said.

According to news reports, more than 60 people went to hospitals with injuries related to the collision.

Commuter rail accidents are relatively rare. One federal?study, looking at the decade between 1996 and 2005, found a declining rate of accidents (with 33 accidents or incidents per million total commuter-train miles in 2005).

Injuries generally totaled fewer than 2,000 per year, and fatalities fewer than 100 per year, during that 10-year period.

Powerball drawing follows late ticket-buying rush

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? It's all about the odds.

With four out of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, someone is almost sure to win the game's highest jackpot, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars ? and that's after taxes. Saturday night's winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11.

Lottery officials said late Saturday that the latest Powerball jackpot figure results were still pending. Estimates have put the jackpot at around $600 million. Officials have not yet announced whether there is a winner.

The chances of winning the prize remain astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That's how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play. But lottery officials estimate about 80 percent of those possible combinations have been purchased.

"This would be the roll to get in on," Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said earlier Saturday. "Of course there's no guarantee, and that's the randomness of it, and the fun of it."

That didn't deter people across Powerball-playing states ? 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands ? from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday for their chance at striking it filthy rich.

At a mini market in the heart of Los Angeles' Chinatown, employees broke the steady stream of customers into two lines: One for Powerball ticket buyers and one for everybody else. Some people appeared to be looking for a little karma.

"We've had two winners over $10 million here over the years, so people in the neighborhood think this is the lucky store," employee Gordon Chan said as he replenished a stack of lottery tickets on a counter.

Workers at one suburban Columbia, S.C., convenience store were so busy with ticket buyers that they hadn't updated their sign with the current jackpot figure, which was released Friday. Customer Armous Peterson was reluctant to share his system for playing the Powerball. The 56-year-old was well aware of the long odds, but he also knows the mantra of just about every person buying tickets.

"Somebody is going to win," he said. "Lots of people are going to lose, too. But if you buy a ticket, that winner might be you."

The latest jackpot was expected to be the world's second largest overall, behind a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012. If $600 million, the jackpot would currently include a $376.9 million cash option.

Charles Hill of Dallas said he buys lottery tickets every day. And he knows exactly what he'd do if he wins.

"What would I do with my money? I'd run and hide," he said. "I wouldn't want none of my kinfolks to find me."

Clyde Barrow, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, specializes in the gaming industry. He said one of the key factors behind the ticket-buying frenzy is the size of the jackpot ? people are interested in the easy investment.

"Even though the odds are very low, the investment is very small," he said. "Two dollars gets you a chance."

That may be why Ed McCuen has a Powerball habit that's as regular as clockwork. The 57-year-old electrical contractor from Savannah, Ga., buys one ticket a week, regardless of the possible loot. It's a habit he didn't alter Saturday.

"You've got one shot in a gazillion or whatever," McCuen said, tucking his ticket in his pocket as he left a local convenience store. "You can't win unless you buy a ticket. But whether you buy one or 10 or 20, it's insignificant."

Seema Sharma doesn't seem to think so. The newsstand employee in Manhattan's Penn Station purchased $80 worth of tickets for herself. She also was selling tickets all morning at a steady pace, instructing buyers where to stand if they wanted machine-picked tickets or to choose their own numbers.

"I work very hard ? too hard ? and I want to get the money so I can finally relax," she said. "You never know."

Tunisian police clash with Islamists over banned rally

By Tarek Amara

TUNIS (Reuters) - Supporters of a hardline Islamist group clashed with Tunisian police in two cities on Sunday after the government banned its annual rally and the regional arm of al Qaeda urged it to stand firm against the authorities.

Violence broke out in the central city of Kairouan, venue of the planned rally, and in a district of Tunis, where a Reuters witness said a number of people were injured.

The Ansar al-Sharia group is the most radical to emerge in Tunisia since secular dictator Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali was toppled in 2011, and poses a test to the authority of the moderate Islamist government.

In Kairouan, where tens of thousands of members of Ansar al-Sharia had been expected to attend the planned rally on Sunday, the group's supporters threw stones at police, who fired teargas in response.

Police also prevented the group, which openly supports al Qaeda, from holding a smaller religious meeting in the Ettadamen district of the capital Tunis. Clashes broke out with Islamists who chanted: "The rule of the tyrant should fall."

Police fired teargas and shots into the air to disperse some 500 stone-throwing protesters, some of whom set fire to cars, lowered the Tunisian flag and replaced it with a black al Qaeda banner.

Buses and the subway stopped working and shops in the neighborhood were closed, while military aircraft patrolled overhead. Clashes spread to two other areas of the capital.

Tunisia was the first country to stage an "Arab Spring" uprising, inspiring similar revolutions in Egypt and Libya. The new government is led by a moderate Islamist party, Ennahda, but hardline Islamist Salafists are seeking a broader role for religion, alarming a secular elite which fears this could undermine individual freedoms, women's rights and democracy.

"SECURITY THREAT"

The Interior Ministry said on Friday it had banned the gathering of Ansar al-Sharia, "which has shown disdain for state institutions, incited violence against them and poses a threat to public security".

Prime Minister Ali Larayedh said on Saturday the group was linked to terrorism. The same day, the regional arm of al Qaeda issued a statement urging Ansar al-Sharia to defy the government crackdown.

The U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist statements, said al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb encouraged the Tunisian Islamists to continue their "good steps" and beware of provocations by the government.

Ansar al-Sharia said police had arrested its spokesman Saifeddine Rais, but it was not clear where or when. A security source confirmed he had been detained.

The group's leader Saifallah Benahssine, also known as Abu Iyadh, is a former al Qaeda fighter in Afghanistan and is wanted by police for allegedly inciting an attack on the U.S. embassy in September. Four people were killed in those disturbances, which began as a protest over a film that mocked the Prophet Mohammad.

In a separate development in Kairouan on Sunday, the interior ministry said a woman had been arrested for placing a feminist banner on the wall of a mosque and trying to expose her breasts.

The activist, named Amina, had sparked controversy in recent months by publishing nude images on Facebook and writing on her chest: "My body belongs to me and not the honor of others".

Kenya police kill "terror couple"

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Police shot dead a couple suspected to be terrorists after they threw four grenades, wounding five officers in an overnight stand-off, a police official said Sunday.

Following a tip, investigators raided the apartment where the couple was staying in the Githurai Kimbo area on the outskirts of Nairobi Saturday evening and ordered them out of their house, said Boniface Mwaniki, the head of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.

The couple refused to surrender, threw grenades and used their eight-month-old baby as a human shield, said Mwaniki.

Police fired tear-gas repeatedly into the house, said a resident of the building. The baby was removed from the house unconscious and two grenades were found in the house, said Augustine Nthumbi, the officer in charge of the Githurai Kimbo.

The incident highlights the threat of Islamic extremist violence in Kenya.

The man killed was Kenyan national Felix Otuko, who was suspected of carrying out two grenade attacks in October 2011 ? the first of a string of grenade and gun attacks in Kenya, said Mwaniki of the police anti-terrorism unit.

Mwaniki said Otuko was a member al-Shabab cell with another Kenyan national Elgiva Bwire Oliacha, also known as Mohammed Seif, who is serving a life sentence in jail for grenade attacks in Nairobi on Oct. 24, 2011 which killed one person and injured 20 others.

Investigations showed that Oliacha supplied Otuko with the grenades for the two attacks, Mwaniki said.

These attacks followed threats against Kenya from Islamic extremist rebels in neighboring Somalia. The al-Shabab radicals, who are allied to al-Qaida, vowed to attack Kenyan targets in retaliation for the Kenyan government's decision in Oct. 2011 to send troops into Somalia to battle against al-Shabab.

The Kenyan government sent troops into Somalia after several cross-border attacks and kidnapping of foreign tourists that were blamed on al-Shabab.

Al-Shabab was working to establish a new generation of East African jihadists, warned a report by the United Nations in July 2011. The extremists represent a new security challenge for the region and wider international community, the report said. The rebels recruited other Africans in addition to ethnic Somalis, said the report.

Kenyan police warn that some are being trained by al-Shabab in Somalia and then returning to Nairobi slums, a border region near Somalia and Kenya's Indian Ocean coast, warn Kenyan police.

The Bankruptcy Tips You Need To Know Right Now

While filing for bankruptcy may be a hard decision to make, for some it is a necessity. If you are thinking about filing for bankruptcy, it?s best to be armed with as much information as possible. Continue to read this article to learn what has helped others who have filed for bankruptcy.

If you know people who have filed for bankruptcy, ask them who they would recommend rather than relying on Internet reviews or worse, just randomly picking someone out of the phone book. Bankruptcy attracts a lot of fly-by-night firms that take advantage of desperate people, and a word-of-mouth recommendation makes it more likely that your bankruptcy will go smoothly.

Before filing for personal bankruptcy, make sure you are doing the right thing. Look into other options, such as consumer credit counseling. Bankruptcy is a permanent part of your credit, so before you make such a big decision, you might want to explore all other choices so that your credit history is affected as minimally as possible.

TIP! Be sure to bring anything up repeatedly if you are unsure if your lawyer is focusing on it. Don?t assume that he?ll remember something from a month ago; tell him again.

Investigate any new laws before deciding to file a bankruptcy. The laws change a lot, so you need to look them up and have a better idea of how to properly approach the bankruptcy process. Your state?s legislative offices or website will have up-to-date information about these changes.

Many bankruptcy lawyers offer free consultations, so go to several before choosing one. It is important to meet with the actual lawyer, because paralegals or assistants cannot give you legal advice. Look for a lawyer who you can relate to.

Become knowledgeable in regards to details about chapter seven bankruptcy vs. chapter 13 bankruptcy. Take the time to learn about them extensively, and then figure out which one will be best for your particular situation. Learning about bankruptcy is not simple, so call a bankruptcy attorney to make an appointment to ask questions.

After filing for bankruptcy, you may have difficulty getting approved for unsecured credit. If this happens to you, think about applying for a couple of secured credit cards. By doing this, you will be letting people know that you want to fix your credit score. Once creditors see that you are making an effort to restore your credit, they may allow you to get an unsecured card in the future.

TIP! You are going to get found out and get in trouble if you don?t disclose all your assets, so be totally honest from the beginning. It is important that you are completely transparent, showing everything financial that needs to be known.

Don?t forget to enjoy yourself during your bankruptcy. Filing is the most intensive step in the process, so afterwards it?s important to let go of some of your stress. That stress can cause depression, if you don?t take care to avoid it. Bankruptcy is hard to go through, but you must remember that a less stressful, more enjoyable life is waiting on the other side of it.

Even if you are involved with Chapter 13 bankruptcy, it is still possible to get a mortgage or an automobile loan. However, it won?t be as easy as it may have been to get one prior to the bankruptcy. Before you can take out a new loan, you will have to clear it with your trustee. When you meet with your trustee or financial adviser, make sure that you come up with a sound budget proposal. The odds are also good that you will be asked exactly why you?re purchasing a new item. Make sure you have a good reason.

Filing for bankruptcy can cause stress. To have a reliable and trustworthy guide through the process, find a highly qualified attorney. Do not let price be the only factor. Hire the best attorney you can afford, not the one who charges the most. Speak with trusted people, check the BBB and take advantage of the free bankruptcy attorney consultations. You might be able to view a court hearing. You might be able to watch how your prospective attorney handles the case.

Don?t pay for an attorney consultation and ask him or her anything you want to know. Free consultations are standard practice among bankruptcy lawyers, so interview multiple candidates before making a final decision. Choose an attorney who is experienced, educated and well-versed in bankruptcy laws. You can think about your decision before making a commitment. Consulting with several attorneys will also help you find someone you trust.

TIP! Before you file for personal bankruptcy, weigh all of your options. Talk with a bankruptcy lawyer and ask about alternatives, such as debt consolidation or negotiating with creditors.

Do your homework so you thoroughly understand the laws pertaining to bankruptcy before you file. For instance, you are not allowed to move assets from your name to someone else?s for a year before you file. Also, it is illegal to load up your credit cards with debt right before filing occurs.

Include your entire financial information when you file for bankruptcy. If you do not do so accurately, your petition could be dismissed, or at the very least delayed. Even small amounts of money contribute to your overall financial picture, so do not exclude them. Include any income from jobs that you do on the side or assets, such as property and vehicles.

Do not take too long deciding that it is time to declare bankruptcy. Your debt will only continue to mount as you waiver on the decision, difficult as it might be. Talk to a lawyer as soon as you can to get the advice that you need.

Remember that your Chapter 7 filing may affect other people in your life as well. Once you complete a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you will be free of any responsibility of debt, which could put all responsibility on someone close to you. However, creditors can demand co-debtors pay the amount in full.

TIP! File at exactly the right time to maximize the effect of your bankruptcy. Timing is important, and that is especially true when filing for bankruptcy.

Try to get a referral from a trusted source before choosing an attorney to handle your bankruptcy and make sure they have no issues with the state bar or the better business bureau. Because of the increase in bankruptcy filings, this field attracts a lot of newer, inexperienced attorneys. It is crucial that your lawyer has the proper licensing and has plenty of experience. Information on lawyers and their ratings by clients can be found on the Internet.

There are lawyers who maintain a telephone service meant to field calls from creditors attempting to contact debtors who have filed for bankruptcy. By contacting the phone number that you supply, your creditors can get confirmation that a bankruptcy filing incorporating their debt is underway. This will prevent them from calling you in the future.

There are some debts that a bankruptcy will not eliminate. Debts like student loans always remain on your report even if you file. If you have these types of debts, use a loan consolidation service or credit repair agency to help.

Do not take a large cash advance from credit cards prior to filing, knowing that bankruptcy erases all debts. If you were to do this you could be charged criminally with fraud, because the act is intended to rip off the company.

TIP! If you intend to file bankruptcy soon, you may want to discontinue paying all debts. You may find that bankruptcy law prohibits you from paying back some types of creditors for 90 days before you file, and a year for family members.

Speaking with others who have gone through bankruptcy can help you feel better about the process. Filing for bankruptcy can make you feel extremely alienated, even from your close friends. On the Internet, however, you can share your struggles and ask for advice from people who have already been through bankruptcy.

Make sure the paperwork you file is accurate. Even when your attorney fills out the paperwork, you are responsible for ensuring all your information is accurate. Although bankruptcy attorneys have legal expertise, they also have plenty of cases to deal with. It is definitely not impossible for them to make mistakes. Because of this, you should verify that all information is accurate on every piece of paperwork filed on your behalf.

Sometimes declaring personal bankruptcy is simply unavoidable. Now, equipped with the information from this article, you can handle the process much more completely. Gleaning insight from others who already walked the same path can minimize complications and help to reduce your own stress at a difficult time.

Write down every one of your debts. You?ll need to know all your debts to file for bankruptcy. Be 100% certain that the amounts you are claiming as being owed are true and correct. It is important that you take your time here; you need to ensure your figures are correct if you want to get these amounts discharged.

Indeed, that's the effect of this color and if you can also add the right furniture, you can also set a perfect mood in the office. So, is it?decorating an office using gray scale?easy?

Using the gray furniture sets combined with the gray wall can also be an option. Or else, you can make it contrast by painting the wall with different colors. Well, the thing is that besides?decorating an office using gray scale?is elegant and mature, it is also considered a good way to make the office become an efficient and attractive place.
