New Limb-Lengthening Tech May Reduce Complications for Sufferers of Crippling Deformities

A move to lengthen limbs internally rather than via an external scaffold could reduce the effects of painful treatments, especially among younger patients

Image: Dr. John Herzenberg

Screaming woke Lanz Ellingsworth. The piercing cries were loud, they were shrill ? and they were coming from his daughter's bedroom.

At 8:30 p.m., Ellingsworth and his wife had tucked their youngest, Lindsay, in for the night. They read her a bedtime story, kissed her on both cheeks and crept out of the room. Six hours later, their little girl was a mass of quivering agony.

In the middle of the night Lindsay had shifted slightly in her sleep. The abnormally brittle femur in her left leg splintered into multiple pieces. She woke from her dreams and plunged into a living nightmare.

"When I woke up that night, what I kept repeating was that 'somebody hit me with a sledgehammer,' Lindsay says. "That's how it felt. Somebody literally smashed my leg with something. And I just screamed."

Lindsay, a tiny, freckled eight-year-old, was used to pain. She was born with a congenital limb deformity called "underdeveloped femur condition," in which one leg is shorter than the other by more than two centimeters. Up to 100,000 people are diagnosed with limb-length disorders in the U.S. each year, according to Bart Balkman, vice president of Ellipse Technologies, an Irvine, Calif.?based orthopedics company.

Left untreated, the condition can result in chronic pain, loss of mobility, degenerative arthritis and debilitating scoliosis, an abnormal and painful curvature of the spine that typically progresses throughout one's lifetime. At birth or shortly thereafter parents whose children have a severe discrepancy (estimates range from a two- to three-centimeter or more differential) must make a decision?amputate the shorter limb or commit to a lengthening regimen to equalize them.

"Can you ever imagine having a child and loving that child and being told that part of your child's leg had to be amputated?" says David Hootnick an orthopedic surgeon in Onondaga County, N.Y., who studies congenital abnormalities. "Can you imagine the emotional stress you'd have to go through?"

Limb-lengthening technology has progressed significantly from the early 1950s when a handful of doctors first began the practice. Gavriil Ilizarov invented the external fixator in Russia, a device he modeled after a horse harness. Now, about 100 surgeons in the U.S. perform limb-lengthening procedures, and a new internal approach offers patients expanded mobility and promises fewer complications. The device, called "Precice," received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for consumer use but is still relatively unknown within the greater medical community.

[View a slideshow of the Precice technology.]

By far the most common procedure for children with leg discrepancies?and the one used in Lindsay's surgery?is an external "fixator." Surgeons break a patient's bone in half and pull it apart, allowing the body's natural healing capabilities to fill in the gap with new bone, thereby lengthening the limb.

John Blanco, a specialist in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, has been performing the operation for years. With the patient under a general anesthetic, Blanco drills screws into the top and the bottom of the afflicted bone. The screws are fastened into a metal frame that will stabilize the leg during and subsequent to the procedure. After cutting a small incision in the leg, Blanco takes a hammer and breaks the bone in two. It's a dull sound, he says, like hitting wood?more of a thwack than a snap. The finished product resembles an Erector Set construction covering the leg.

South Africa's ANC starts leadership convention

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa (AP) ? South Africa's governing African National Congress political party has begun a conference to pick who will lead it into the nation's next election.

Some 4,000 delegates gathered Sunday at its Mangaung conference, being held in the city also known as Bloemfontein, to choose whether President Jacob Zuma or his quiet, unionist deputy Kgalema Motlanthe should helm the party. Zuma came into the event wearing a leather jacket with the green, yellow and black colors of the ANC. He waved with both of his hands, then spoke to Motlanthe as he took a spot on stage.

Zuma is scheduled to give an address later Sunday.

Whoever the party picks will likely be the next president of this nation of 50 million people, as opposition parties don't have the same support.

Holiday on hold as fiscal cliff clock keeps ticking

12 hrs.

The last two weeks of December are traditionally quiet for stocks, but traders accustomed to a bit of time off are staying close to their mobile devices, thanks to the "fiscal cliff."?

Last-minute negotiations in Washington on the so-called fiscal cliff - nearly $600 billion of tax increases and spending cuts set to take effect in January that could cause a sharp slowdown in growth or even a recession - are keeping some traders and analysts from taking Christmas holidays because any deal could have a big impact on markets.?

"A lot of firms are saying to their trading desks, 'You can take days off for Christmas, but you are on standby to come in, if anything happens.' This is certainly different from previous years, especially around this time of the year, when things are supposed to be slowing down," said J.J. Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago.?

This week "is going to be a Capitol Hill-driven market."?

With talks between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner at an apparent standstill, it was increasingly likely that Washington would not come up with a deal before Jan. 1.?

Gordon Charlop, managing director at Rosenblatt Securities in New York, will also be on standby for the holiday season.?

"It's a 'Look, guys, let's just rotate and be sensible" type of situation going on," Charlop said.?

"We are hopeful there is some resolution down there, but it seems to me they continue to walk that political tightrope ... rather than coming up with something."?

Despite concerns that the deadline will pass without a deal, the S&P 500 has held its ground with a 12.4 percent gain for the year. For the past week, though, the S&P 500 slid 0.3 percent.?

BEWARE OF THE WITCH?

This Friday will mark the last so-called "quadruple witching" day of the year, when contracts for stock options, single stock futures, stock index options and stock index futures all expire. This could make trading more volatile.?

"We could see some heavy selling as there is going to be a lot of re-establishing of positions, reallocation of assets before the year-end," Kinahan said.?

RETHINKING APPLE?

Higher tax rates on capital gains and dividends are part of the automatic tax increases that will go into effect next year if Congress and the White House cannot come up with a solution to avert the fiscal cliff. That possibility could give investors an incentive to unload certain stocks in some tax-related selling by Dec. 31.?

Some market participants said tax-related selling may be behind the weaker trend in the stock price of market leader Apple. Apple's stock has lost a quarter of its value since it hit a lifetime high of $705.07 on Sept. 21.?

On Friday, the stock fell 3.8 percent to $509.79, its lowest close since Feb. 17, after the iPhone 5 got a chilly reception at its debut in China and two analysts cut shipment forecasts. But the stock is still up nearly 26 percent for the year.?

"If you owned Apple for a long time, you should be thinking about reallocation as there will be changes in taxes and other regulations next year, although we don't really know which rules to play by yet," Kinahan said.?

But one indicator of the market's reduced concern about the fiscal cliff compared with a few weeks ago, is the defense sector, which will be hit hard if the spending cuts take effect. The PHLX Defense Sector Index is up nearly 13 percent for the year, and sits just a few points from its 2012 high.?

Romney's English roots surprise cousins left behind

BARROW-IN-FURNESS, England (Reuters) - Mitt Romney's fight to become America's next president has the backing of one enthusiastic group of supporters, although they don't actually have a vote: his relatives in England.

Few associate the Republican candidate with Britain but it was in England's industrial northwest that his ancestors lived for generations and converted to Mormonism before leaving for the United States in 1841 in search of the promised land.

It was a bold escape for a family of lowly carpenters. By sailing for the New World they took a step that eventually brought the Romney clan to the fore of American politics.

But some of them stayed and their descendants still live along Britain's rainy western coast - a world away from the intrigue and glamour of Washington.

One is a 69-year-old English widow who discovered just a few weeks ago that she is a distant cousin of the former governor of Massachusetts.

"It's all come out of the blue," Jennie Iveson told Reuters in her modest home in Barrow-in-Furness, a shipyard town once at the heart of Britain's industrial revolution. "It's a surprise really. Quite a surprise. Big surprise."

Iveson's link to Romney came to light when her inquisitive grandson-in-law began tracing back their family history by delving into archives in their home county of Lancashire.

Records show that Iveson is Mitt Romney's fourth cousin - they share a great-great-great grandfather, George Romney, who died in 1859. And now she can't help but notice that her distant American relative does bear a striking family resemblance.

"I saw him on the telly twice the other day, last week I think. He looks a bit like my brother," said Iveson, a retired factory worker, most of whose children have no jobs.

"(My brother) looks quite like him. He had dark hair like him. It's all grey now. He (Romney) looks like our Mike. Same sort of face and everything."

She offers a shrug and a smile when asked about Romney's wealth and privileged status in the United States, where he is sometimes accused by critics of being out of touch with poor people. "I wish him luck and everything else," she said.

ONE OF THE WEALTHIEST

Romney is one of the wealthiest Americans ever to run for the White House. He has estimated his fortune at between $190 million and $250 million.

But for Romney, his faith and English roots remain a sensitive issue, partly because his Mormon religion is still regarded with suspicion by some American voters.

When he came to Britain in July this year, Romney did not visit the area where his family have their roots - unusual since emphasizing a European heritage is often seen as an electoral plus in U.S. politics.

Barack Obama, who faces Romney in the November 6 presidential election, went down well last year when he toured an Irish village where one of his forebears once lived.

Romney's campaign spokeswoman made no comment when asked how the Republican challenger felt about his English origins.

In Lancashire, the county the candidate's ancestors left behind, Romney enthusiasts offered their own explanation.

"He is Mormon and this is Mormon central," said Christopher Nelson, a local vicar with an interest in Romney's heritage. "Perhaps he would perceive (coming here) as highlighting his Mormonism more than highlighting his roots."

His known relatives in England are genealogically so far removed that many of them were not even aware of the link until recently when the U.S. election campaign began to gather pace.

Amateur genealogist Simon Nash was astonished to discover while digging into regional records that his wife Maria was Mitt Romney's fourth cousin twice removed.

Poring over archival material and photos on his laptop in his home in the industrial city of Preston, Nash said it was a matter of tracing people back to a common ancestor - a fairly easy task since most records are available publicly in Britain.

The quest has certainly made Nash, whose day job involves dressing in a duck outfit and posing as a mascot for a local football team, more interested in U.S. politics.

"If he got in, America would be a completely different place in three years time to what it is now," he said. "I don't know if it will be for the better."

Nash's wife Maria, 32, was equally astounded by his researches.

"I was very much shocked ... It still feels like ... it's not quite happening to (me)," said Maria, who is Jennie Iveson's granddaughter. "It's quite an unreal feeling."

Would she like to meet Romney in the White House? "I think it would be very surreal," she said with a shy giggle. "I would like to go there for a brew (cup of tea) if he ever got in there."

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

The village of Dalton-in-Furness, a picturesque scattering of mediaeval cottages, is where the Romney clan began. Its men are still remembered there as hard-working carpenters.

One of them was William Romney, who gained notoriety for making his own coffin and putting it on display in his workshop before he died in 1915.

"I get the impression that quite a few Romneys were carpenters. It seems to be a family trait," Jim Walton, a Dalton historian, said outside a canary-yellow cottage where William Romney used to live and work.

"Should Mitt Romney succeed and become the next president of the United States, he would be able to look around in pride and say: 'My great great granddad came from Dalton-in-Furness'. Well, I hope he can say that in pride."

Dalton has plenty of Romney-related history. Its most famous son was George Romney, who went to London and became one of the most celebrated portrait painters of the 18th century.

Two streets and a park are named after the artist, who is said to have had a secret affair with the mistress of Lord Nelson, the naval hero who defeated the French at Trafalgar.

George was buried in the churchyard of St Mary's parish church - where Mitt Romney's great-great grandparents, Elizabeth and Miles, were baptized and married before converting to the Mormon faith in 1837 and moving to the United States.

Their daughter Sarah's baptism record from the year before is still in the archives in Preston, with her father's vocation - joiner - scribbled in an old parish book.

"It's a fascinating story that Dalton holds," said Rev. Alan Mitchell, gazing over the town's skyline from the top of a church tower - a view that has changed little since Romneys lived here. Pointing at a couple of old communion cups, he added: "The Romneys could have touched these."

At the time, Lancashire was a tough, polluted and chaotic place to live, and disease and drunkenness were rife. Mormon promises of a better and more orderly life fell on fertile ground.

"It was a grimy, mucky hell on earth," said Nelson, the vicar. "Why on earth you would want to stay here, if somebody tells you there is milk and honey elsewhere? It was a horrible place."

FREE TICKET

Early Mormon missionaries offered not only salvation but a free ticket to the United States.

They also gave Miles Romney a position of authority aboard a ship called the Sheffield, making the arrangement all the more attractive for a young and ambitious man with a large family.

But many other Romneys never converted and stayed behind in England, and the relatives who live here today know little about Mormonism.

In his autobiography, Mitt Romney said the family left England for New Orleans and travelled by steamer up the Mississippi to Nauvoo, Illinois, where they joined other Mormons. Later they followed Mormons in a trek across the plains to Utah. "Romneys are, by nature, an adventurous breed," he wrote.

The Mormon fascination with the souls of their ancestors means they have one of the world's biggest family history archives. The Mormon temple near Preston still contains records detailing the lives of British Romneys.

One document, describing the state of Miles Romney's family after emigration, listed his job as a joiner and said: "In 1850 Miles had a household of ten, and a real wealth of ?200."

The area is still very much the heartland of British Mormonism. The Ribble, a local river, is known as the River Jordan of European Mormonism. This is where England's early Mormons were baptized.

A memorial near its muddy bank commemorates those early conversions. Europe's biggest Mormon temple is nearby, its spire towering high above the misty, rain-washed hills. Neatly dressed missionaries in dark suits and ties are frequent visitors.

"The missionaries that we see coming from America will have roots that originated here in England," said Bishop Michael Turner, leader of a local Mormon congregation. "It's an exciting time ... to have a candidate who is a member of the church."

But for some, Romney is an unpopular figure, particularly after he suggested during his visit this year that Britain was not ready to host the Olympic Games.

"I think Mitt Romney is rather careless in his choice of words sometimes," said Walton, the Dalton historian. "But there you are. Can't have everything, can you?"

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Official figures show that unemployment in the 17 country euro currency bloc hit another record in May as the continent continued to be buffeted by its debt crisis.

Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, said Monday that unemployment rose to 11.1 percent in May from 11 percent the previous month. That's the highest rate since the euro was launched in 1999.

Unemployment has been edging higher for over a year now as concerns over the debt crisis have weighed on economic activity. The highest unemployment rate was recorded in Spain, where nearly one in four people are out of work, closely followed by Greece.

In total, 17.6 million people were out of work in the eurozone in May, 1.8 million higher than the year before.

Best Bets: 'Spider-Man' spins web with new cast

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Happy Independence Day week! If it's hot where you are, slink inside to the air conditioning and check out a big movie, and of course, don't forget the fireworks.

TUESDAY: 'The Amazing Spider-Man'
The webslinger's story gets a whole new cast, with Andrew Garfield stepping in as poor Peter Parker, the hapless high schooler who gets chomped by a radioactive spider and becomes an unlikely superhero. Emma Stone plays girlfriend Gwen Stacy (comic-book readers know she came before redheaded Mary Jane Watson) and Sally Field and Martin Sheen play Peter's Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Rhys Ifans faces off against Garfield as Dr. Curt Connors, who transforms into a giant lizard when his limb-regenerating experiments go horribly wrong. It's always good to have Spidey back, and who knows? Once he gets a movie under his utility belt, he may even join the Avengers, just like in the funny pages. (Opens July 3.)

WEDNESDAY: 'A Capitol Fourth'
If you're not heading out to a fireworks display, catch all the rockets' red glare from the comfort of your couch with "A Capitol Fourth." The annual Washington concert will be hosted by "Dancing With the Stars" host Tom Bergeron. "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips, Kool and the Gang, Matthew Broderick and others will perform at the event. (July 4, 8 p.m., PBS.)

FRIDAY: 'Savages'
Oliver Stone returns to theaters with "Savages," which has intrigued movie buffs since the first clips were revealed months ago. Aaron Johnson and?Taylor Kitsch play pot growers who share a girlfriend (Blake Lively). When she's kidnapped, they have to go up against a drug cartel and a corrupt DEA agent?(John Travolta). (Opens July 6.)?

?Wield a More Subversive Sword!?

Talking with him about any kind of art?painting, music, literature, film?was a joy. His critical sensibility was marvelously astute (as can be seen in a book of his collected essays on children?s literature, Caldecott & Co.) and the pleasure he took in beauty was boundless. He adored Melville, Mozart, and Mickey Mouse (and would have noted the alliteration with pleasure?he wrote in different places about the mysterious significance he attached to the letter M, his own first initial and that of many of his characters, beginning with Max of Where the Wild Things Are). During one visit, he showed us a portable writing desk that had belonged to Melville, which still contained some of the author?s pen nibs and dried-out inkpots. Maurice was as excited and awed to be handing us the writing implements of his favorite author as we were to be hanging out with him. He collected all kinds of wonderful things?first editions of American literature, William Blake prints, James Marshall sketches, early Mickey Mouse memorabilia?and he loved to bring them out and show them to guests, not to brag about his possessions, but because touching and sharing and talking about beautiful objects made him happy.

Hands-on with Kyocera Rise, an Android 4.0 smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard (video)

Hands-on with Kyocera Rise, an Android 4.0 smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard (video)

Kyocera is looking to regain a foothold in the US smartphone market, and curiously enough, it's doing so by catering to niche audiences. First we saw the Hydro, a waterproof handset, and alongside it is the Rise, which features a sliding QWERTY keyboard. Both phones are built for CDMA networks, although Kyocera has yet to announce carrier availability for either.

Spec-wise, the Rise is very similar to the Hydro, and this extends to the OS. In our brief time with the phone, we were treated to a largely vanilla interpretation of Ice Cream Sandwich, which makes the Rise a bit of a rare breed in the QWERTY world -- hopefully its future carrier doesn't dictate huge alterations. The phone features a Qualcomm MSM8655 SoC with a 1GHz CPU, a 3.5-inch, 480 x 320 IPS LCD display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash and a 1,500 mAh battery. When compared to other QWERTY sliders, the handset itself is rather compact and fit nicely in our hand. We were similarly quite fond of the sliding mechanism on the Rise, which felt natural and provided just enough resistance. The four-row keyboard is altogether forgettable, but it should serve those who insist upon physical keys just fine. Our biggest gripe about the Rise, however, is its low-res display, which seems like quite a misstep -- even for a budget device.

In terms of storage, you'll find 512MB of RAM, 2GB built-in and a 2GB microSD card. The Rise also features 802.11n (WiFi), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and EV-DO Rev. A. It's safe to say that Kyocera is targeting budget audiences with the Rise, but the strategy may work to its advantage if other carriers fail to keep their QWERTY sliders up-to-date with the latest version of Android. You'll find our hands-on video after the break.

ShelfX's Vending Fridge nixes the cashier, uses QR codes, RFID to 'know what you took'

Image

QR codes and RFID tags aren't uncommon when it comes to automated payment applications, and now Colorado-based ShelfX has purposed them for its new wireless-equipped Vending Fridges. Eliminating the need for a cashier -- or cash, for that matter -- each unit allows you to purchase any items packed inside by scanning a QR code with your phone (using the company's app) or an RFID badge. Upon presenting either method to the machine, it's able to tell who you are and unlocks its door. From there, you can grab whatever you'd like, while ShelfX automatically pulls funds your account for what's been removed. The system is also smart enough to know when goods are put back, so you won't have to worry about being charged while making up your mind. All of the money goes through ShelfX, allowing it to take "a small percentage" for itself before sending a monthly payment to owners. The Vending Fridge is currently on sale for $600, and a retrofitting kit for your own fridge is also available for half that amount -- no word on whether it has kid-blocking or crab-proofing options, though. You'll find more information in the press release just after the break.

SpaceX redefines 'fashionably late' as Dragon trip to the ISS is delayed again

Image

Just a week after NASA signed off on its launch, SpaceX has had to postpone the flight of the Dragon. It's yet another delay to NASA's efforts to supply the International Space Station using private spacecraft and reduce the US's dependence on Soyuz rockets. Taking to Twitter, founder Elon Musk said that the company needed to do more testing on the docking code for the capsule, while spokesperson Kirstin Brost Grantham told Space.com that the company needed more time to test and review the hardware. Pending NASA's approval, it'll begin its journey heavenward on the head of a Falcon 9 between May 3rd and May 7th. Given that the original mission was scheduled for November last year, they'll probably need to check the use-by dates on those space rations.

Cincinnati Bell pushing Ice Cream Sandwich to HTC Sensation users

HTC Sensation

Cincinnati Bell has announced the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the HTC Sensation starts rolling out today. Sensation owners will get updated to Android 4.0.3, but there's no word on what version of HTC Sense to expect. We're fairly certain it will be 3.6, just like the other Sensations received. The OTA starting today is expected to be completed by April 30. Cinci Bell also stresses that users will not have to visit a store, nor will they lose any data during the update. Interestingly, they also state that customers don't have to update their phones, which is in contrast to most carriers who require the latest official version for any technical support. Holler out if you see this one!

Where to Save Your Retirement Contributions - The Retirement ...

Welcome to the 3rd week of my ?Understanding Retirement Planning & Investing? series! If you?ve missed the first two posts be sure to check them out!

With the understanding that a 401(k), 403(b), 457, Roth IRA, and Traditional IRA are simply investment vehicles ? tax-sheltered accounts (an umbrella) that allow your money to grow tax-deferred ? the next step in the retirement planning process is to learn which account(s) will be the best places to save your retirement contributions.

This may seem basic to some people but I get asked all of the time, ?where is the best place to invest money for retirement??

Should you put money in the 401(k) before you contribute to the Roth IRA?

Why not contribute to the Roth IRA before the 401(k)? You know about all of the great benefits that I talked about in my first post of this series, so it might seem logical to start with the Roth.

Where to Save Your Retirement Contributions

As a financial advisor, I personally follow this route and recommend it to all of my clients.

  • 1. Look for FREE MONEY

Free Money?? Who would say no to free money?

Well, people do it every day! It?s right under their nose and they just walk right past it without understanding they?re passing up FREE BENJAMINS! .

All you have to do is go win the lottery or get an inheritance. BOOM! Free Money! You can thank me later. :)

In all seriousness, what I?m talking about here is taking advantage of the company match provided by your employer!

While some employers have suspended their matching (post 2008) many continue to do it in some fashion. If you have a 401(k), 403(b), or 457 and your employer is offering a match, that is the first place you should invest your retirement money!

Don?t take my word for it. Let?s think about this logically?

If your employer is matching 100% or 50% of your contributions then that is FREE MONEY! That is a 100% or 50% return on investment, respectively, BEFORE YOUR MONEY EVER REACHES THE MARKET!

You simply can?t beat a 50%, 75% or 100% return on your investment.

  • 2. Tax-Free Money

After you?ve contributed to your employer sponsored plan up to the company match, if you still have additional money to contribute to retirement savings, then the next thing I look for is Tax-Free accounts.

While there are a few different Tax-Free retirement vehicles and investments, the place I?d suggest to consider first is the Roth IRA.

To jog your memory there are a few special benefits of the Roth IRA:

    • The account is funded with after-tax dollars but you NEVER pay taxes again (even when you withdrawal money after age 59 1/2).
    • The interest you earn NEVER gets taxed (assuming you withdrawal it after 59 1/2)

In my mind there is ZERO doubt that taxes will go up in this country ? ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH INCOME EARNERS.

What?you think you?re not a high income earner? If you start saving for retirement early, invest prudently, and build a LARGE nest egg, do you think it?s likely you?ll be in a higher income tax bracket in retirement than you are today? I certainly do!

On top of that, the reality is that there are only a few ways our country will ever get back on sound financial setting and part of the solution will have to involve increasing taxes, for everyone! Period.

I?d rather know my tax liability today and take the hit now, instead of relying on our government to manage our country well over the next 30-40 years and HOPE that taxes will be the same as they are today (or lower) by the time I retire.

  • 3. Tax-Deferred Money

After you?ve taken full advantage of your employer?s contributions AND once you?ve maxed out your Roth IRA contributions, then I?d invest any further retirement savings into a tax-deferred account (if you?re confused by those definitions then please see the 2nd post of the series that I mentioned at the start of this post).

This means to go back to the 401(k), 403(b), or 457 and contribute as much as you can up to the maximum amount allowable (50% of your income or $17,000/year as of 2012 ? whichever is lower).

This may be clear by the suggestions above but my belief is:

  • Free $$$ > Tax-Free Money
  • Tax-Free Money > Tax-Deferred

Retirement Investing Order of Priority (made simple)

For those of you that want an easy breakdown and prefer for somebody to tell you what to do without understanding the reasoning, then here.

1. 401(k) ? UP TO THE MATCH

2. Roth IRA ? up to the limit ($5,000/year or $6k/year if over 50)

3. 401(k) ? up to the limit

If you don?t have a 401(k) then contribute to whatever employer sponsored plan that is available to you (403(b), 457, etc.).

I realize many people believe throwing money in their 401(k) is easier than contributing to a Roth because they never actually get to see the money. However, that lack of discipline forces those people to skip step 2 and miss out on future TAX-FREE money.

At the end of the day, which order you choose comes down to whether or not you believe taxes will go up over time. I know I do! PLEASE give me all of the future tax-free money that I can get!

THANK YOU MAY I HAVE ANOTHER!

RedSn0w updated for Mac and Windows: adds Corona A5 jailbreak, other tools

New version of RedSn0w out for Mac and Windows: adds Corona A5 jailbreak features, other tools

What better way to finish off your night than by updating your favorite jailbreaking tool? Now, you'll be able to do just that after the whiz-kids from the iPhone Dev-Team have pushed out a new copy of their famed RedSn0w application. In what's perhaps the biggest inclusion, version 0.9.10b7 now adds implementation of that untethered Corona jailbreak for A5 devices, making it easier for the iOS 5.0.1 crowd to do bits like reinstalling the tweaked software. In addition, the app's now capable of grabbing SHSH blobs (you know, those tiny files that grant your phone freedom) straight from Cydia, while also giving users the ability to see if their slab carries a vulnerable bootloader or if it's exploitable. RedSn0w 0.9.10b7 is out now for both Windows and Mac, and you can grab it at the source link below.
